Our goal is to restore hope, foster independence, and support our members, their families, and caregivers in building brighter futures.
Who We Are
Founded by World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries, the Paralyzed Veterans of America has been a beacon of hope since 1946. The Colonial Chapter, based in Newark, Delaware, serves approximately 320 members who have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard and have a spinal cord injury or disease, whether service-connected or not.
Our unique Accessibility Needs Program provides essential aids like wheelchairs, ramps, home and vehicle modifications, and other tools to support independent living for low-income individuals with disabilities, regardless of veteran status.
What We Do
At the Colonial Chapter, we transform lives through:
-
Advocacy: Collaborating with VA officials to monitor healthcare quality and address veterans’ needs. Our volunteers serve as VA Voluntary Service representatives, ensuring veterans receive the care and benefits they’ve earned.
-
Support Programs: Providing resources like career training and accessibility aids to help paralyzed veterans and others regain independence.
-
Community Engagement: Events like our Virtual Run, Walk, or Roll raise funds and awareness for paralyzed veterans and their caregivers.
-
Research and Education: Funding cutting-edge research to improve care and find cures for spinal cord injuries and diseases.
-
Sports and Recreation: Promoting physical and psychological rehabilitation through adaptive sports and recreational activities.
